What’s new interwebs?

Ms. Dawes realized this hasn’t been updated since before winter break! MARK AND KATIE ARE BACK! They are living in Montclair again until they embark on an even longer trip planned for 2010.

In class we recently finished our How-To Projects which helped practice expository writing. Some of the topics were:

How to make cherry lemonade, how to make salsa, how to make a paper boat, how to do a card trick, how to make gluten free pancakes, how to tune a guitar and how to change a diaper.

For Black History Month we learned about Romare Bearden and created awesome collages inspired by his work. We also wrote poems inspired by Langston Hughes (one of Ms. Dawes’ favorite poets).

Today we started painting water bottles to make in to snowmen which will become the protagonist in our stories. Oh! ANNNND we began our ‘What makes a president’ protagonist poetry project.

More updates sooner than later.

Mark & Katie come visit!

Cures for a boring…

December 11th, 2008 · No Comments · Uncategorized

Today we worked on a poetry lesson that focused on writing a silly poem that followed a specific format. It had to be 7 lines long and in a pyramid shape (first line shortest and last line longest) AND each line had to start with an action verb while remaining an imperative sentence. Oh, and it could be any event that you may find boring, for example: a boring family dinner, plane ride, trip to the art museum, visit to Grandma’s house, wait at the doctor’s office, court room visit, trip to the supermarket, etc.

We read an example called ‘Cures for a Boring Car Ride’ and created two examples as a class before working on our own. Once those are finished Ms. Dawes is going to publish some here for you to read ! Here are the two we wrote in class:

Cures for a Boring Car Ride

Bring bacon.

Go to sleep.

Play your Playstation 2.

Scream as loud as you can.

Pin the tail on your annoying sibling.

Watch a movie on your portable DVD player.

Tune out your parents when they talk about politics.

Cures for a Boring Clothes Shopping Day

Go to sleep in the car.

Run crazy through the clothing racks.

Beg your mom to buy you the best outfit ever.

Leave your mom to go to the best store in the mall.

Refuse to leave until your mom gives you money to spend.

Ditch your mom, hide in the changing room and play your PSP.

Pull the clothes off of the clothes rack and ride the rack through the store.

MARK AND KATIE: What would you write about?? Cures for a boring car ride? night in the T@B? day in the city?    What might Mister write about, he’s pretty creative….

Global Adventure

December 2nd, 2008 · 1 Comment · Uncategorized

Global Adventures is a time when each class or grade chooese a country to study. Ms. Freeh and Mr. DeBello’s class are doing the Ivory Coast. Ms. Ames class is doing Liberia. At the night of Global Adventure kids get a passport and visit the different countries. For each country you visit you learn facts and get a sticker of that country’s flag for your passport. All the kids have fun and look forward to the night of global adventure!

written by C & T

This year at Bradford Global Adventure focused on countries in Africa. There were so many interesting things to look at and learn about in the hallways, gym, and library of school!

NOTE: Mark and Katie, look at Ms. Dawes’ flickr page to see more photos since WordPress doesn’t like the set up she uses.

Questions from 5-F

November 23rd, 2008 · No Comments · Uncategorized

A few questions:

M asks: What would you have done if the truck had been stuck in the mud too?

Hearing the story reminded C of the show Storm Chasers. At the beginning of the year we read a story in our literature anthology about the storm chaser Warren Faidley. He seems like a pretty cool guy.

K repeatedly asks Miss Dawes if you can make a slideshow of some photos so far that we can view at school through vimeo. We’re very curious to see what the United States looks like through your eyes!

What does the t@b look like on the inside?

Where are you going on your way back east? Will you visit all 48 states once the trip is complete?

Did Mark and Mister like our Bronx Zoo video?

We’re headed to the Bronx Zoo tomorrow!! YAY! Mark and Katie did you visit any zoos yet in your travels?

Did we tell you we’re doing our Africa Studies for Global Adventure Night on the Ivory Coast and Liberia? We’re hoping to see tons of African animals at the zoo tomorrow.

Maybe we’ll see one of these guys,

It’s a Fossa, which is a dangerous predator in Madagascar.

VIDEO this week!!!!!

Happy Halloween!

and the super awesome surprise costume….

I just realized you maybe thought it was someone who dressed up as Mister, but nope. I think this is better.

Ms. Dawes sure hopes this works. WordPress isn’t her friend today.

Also, photos aren’t superb quality because they had to be scanned from Ms. Freeh’s digital prints.

5-F’s ZeeMap!

Zee Map

November 3rd, 2008 · No Comments · Uncategorized

Ms. Dawes is working on creating a class ZeeMap as per Katie’s request. The class wrote down one interesting place/state they have visited on a carnival ticket and then Ms. L and Ms. Dawes collected them. It’ll be fun to compare our class map to the Wide Wanderings map!

Also, Ms. Freeh took some photos of us in our costumes after Ms. Dawes left on Friday, so once she gets a hold of them you’ll be able to see. You never told us what Mark was for Halloween!!! Someone other than Ms. Dawes guessed that he was Robin to go along with Bat-Mister.
